STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team will compete in their first dual meet of the 2011 outdoor season this Saturday (April 23) as they travel to Albany, N.Y. for the second annual "Dogfight" against the Albany Great Danes. Field events for Saturday's meet will begin at 12:00 noon; while track events are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. Click the link above for a complete schedule.
"We started the Dogfight last season because we wanted to put two of the top teams in this region against each other and see what they could do head-to-head," Assistant Coach Rich Miller said. "We were successful last season when we hosted the meet here and we hope to continue that success this year as we travel to Albany. The outdoor season is quick, so every meet is important, but this weekend it will be good to see how we compete when we are going head-to-head against just one other team."
The Huskies, who enter the weekend as the No. 2 team in the Northeast Region, improved their regional standing after solid performances last week at both the Hurricane Alumni Invitational and the Brown Collegiate Invitational. Saturday's meet will be the first time during the outdoor season that the Huskies will face a team that is also ranked in the top-five in the Northeast Region, as Albany stands at No. 5.
Individually, nine Huskies rank in the top-five of their respective events in the region, led by four second place standings. Three of those second place rankings came following last weekend's meets, as Noel James (2.11m-high jump), Mike Alleman (17.37m-shot put) and Cody Unger (71.23m-javelin) each improved on their season marks.
Unger also improved on his national ranking, as he now sits 25th nationally in the javelin. He is one of just two BIG EAST athletes to rank in the top-50 nationally in the event, and the only one to rank in the top-25.
Combined, Albany and UConn have won all five of the previous IC4A Championships, setting Saturday's meet up to be a battle. The Great Danes won the indoor titles during the 2010 and 2009 seasons and the 2009 outdoor title, while the Huskies won the indoor crown this season and the outdoor crown during 2010.
