BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team continued the 2011 outdoor season today as they competed at the inaugural LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge, La. The invite, which featured two top-five teams in the country, was hosted by the LSU Tigers at Bernie Moore Stadium on the LSU campus. The Huskies finished with 50 team points and six top-five finishes.
"Overall it was a good meet for us, we only brought 12 athletes with us so we did a great job with the athletes that we brought," Assistant Coach Rich Miller said. "We wanted to build on specific outdoor events that we were not able to practice during the indoor season, and I think we did really well in those events today. Today was an opportunity meet for us and we were coming off hard training, but we made some improvements and I look forward to continuing the outdoor season."
The Huskies were led by Mike Alleman who won the shot put with a throw of 17.23 meters, while he also placed 10th in the disc with a distance of 43.07m. Scott Johnson and Noel James each recorded a second place finish for UConn, as Johnson placed second in the 3000 meter steeplechase and James placed second in the high jump. Johnson posted a time of 9:09.45, which marked his best time over the past two seasons. James posted a clearance of 2.05m in the high jump, marking his second top-two finish during the outdoor season.
Eric Masington had two of the best finishes for the Huskies in field events, as he placed fourth in the disc with a throw of 47.79m and sixth in the shot put with a distance of 15.21m. The final top-five finish in field events came from Justin Siekierski in the javelin, as he recorded a mark of 61.57m to lead all Huskies in the event. Eric Alfiere (60.56m) and Ed Strosnick (55.60m) placed sixth and ninth in the javelin respectively.
Mike Rutt posted the final top-five finish in track events, as he placed fifth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:52.30, followed by Tim Bennatan who placed eighth in 3:54.09.
The Huskies will return to action next week as they participate in the Texas Relays beginning on Wednesday, April 6. UConn will also host its lone home meet of the season next weekend, with the UConn Husky Spring Invite taking place on Saturday, April 9.
