Hartford, Conn. - After defeating Army, 4-2, in West Point, N.Y. on Friday night, the UConn men's hockey squad suffered a 5-3 defeat at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. to the Black Nights. The game was played at the XL Center for precautionary measures due to an accumulation of snow on the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum roof in Storrs, Conn.
A five-goal third period for Army was the undoing of Connecticut tonight.
UConn came into the third with a 1-0 advantage thanks to a perfect play with the man advantage late in the first period. At 16:26, freshman Cole Schneider sent a pass along the right wall to Sean Ambrosie. Ambrosie got his head up and sent a cross ice pass to sophomore Alex Gerke at the back door. Gerke slammed home his fourth goal of the season, all of which coming on the power play.
The Black Knights quickly took a 2-1 edge with a power-play goal at 0:48 from Cody Omilusik and a short-handed strike from Mike Santee at 4:30.
The Huskies evened the score with Schneider's eighth goal of the season at 6:29 but Omilusik quickly added two more goals to complete the hat trick and make it 4-2 in favor of the visitors.
Ambrosie closed the gap to one with his 10th goal of the season at 9:58 but it wasn't enough as Army added an empty-net goal to end the game 5-3.
Sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus made 23 saves in net while Army goaltender Jay Clark stopped 20 UConn attempts.
Junior Marcello Ranallo played his 100th career game at Connecticut tonight.
The Huskies will face Sacred Heart in a home-and-home this weekend, beginning with a 7:05 p.m. contests at Sacred Heart on Friday night.
The two teams will finish the season series at the historic outdoor game played at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn. on Sunday, February 13th. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
