NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kashif Moore, Kevin Steinberg and Jesse Drinks highlighted the University of Connecticut men's track and field performances today as they finished one-two-three in the 60m dash at the Giegengack Invitational. Also joining Moore in the winner's column was freshman Cory Duggan in the pole vault, as the Huskies wrapped up action at both the Giegengack and New Balance Collegiate Invitationals.
"Overall we had solid performances from everybody during the two meets today," head coach Greg Roy said. "All of our sprint events looked really good today along with the distance races that we competed in. We had some good qualifying times this weekend that we can build off of for next weekend as we prepare for the BIG EAST Championship."
Moore won the 60m dash with a 6.91 while Steinberg and Drinks finished back-to-back with a time of 6.92. All three times were IC4A qualifying times, joining four other Huskies who recorded qualifying marks today.
Cory Duggan recorded his first collegiate victory at the Giegengack Invite, winning the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80 meters, which was both a personal best and an IC4A qualifying mark. Zachary Meverden also finished in the top-five in the pole vault, finishing fourth with a mark of 4.65m.
The 800m run was another strong event for the Huskies, as Dan Holst and Tim Bennatan finished second and third, both recording a personal best and an IC4A qualifying time. Holst finished second with a time of 1:50.02 while Bennatan finished third in 1:50.36.
The final two top performances of the day at the Giegengack Invite for UConn came in the 60m hurdles and the 1,000m run. Kyle Edmonds placed fifth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.36 while Scott Johnson recorded a personal best and an IC4A qualifying time in the 1,000m run, finishing eighth in 2:28.93.
Three Huskies competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational today as Mike Rutt was the highest finisher, placing second in the 800 meter run with an NCAA qualifying time of 1:49.16. Noel James competed in the high jump event, finishing fifth with a clearance of 2.06 meters while Kyle Duggan placed sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 5.15 meters.
