STORRS, Conn. - UConn junior defenseman Alex Gerke (Tomah, Wisc.) has been named Atlantic Hockey Association Player of the Week, as announced today by the AHA. Freshman Cody Sharib (Needham, Mass.) was named AHA Rookie of the Week.
Gerke put forth an incredible performance in UConn's 8-3 victory over Sacred Heart on Wednesday night at Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs. Gerke notched five points with a hat trick and two assists. All three of Gerke's goals came with the man advantage as UConn was a perfect 5-for-5 on the power play.
UConn's five goals in one game with the man advantage are the most by any team in the NCAA this season. The five-goal power-play night has been recorded just eight times in the past three years in NCAA Division I hockey. The Huskies have converted on 31.8-percent of their chances to rank first in all of Division I.
Gerke's hat trick was the first by a UConn player since current senior Corey Jendras notched three goals in the first game of the AHA Quarterfinals against Mercyhurst in Storrs on March 11, 2011.
Gerke, a 2010 AHA All-Rookie selection, has recorded three goals and six assists for nine points this season. He ranks 15th in the nation in points per game by a defenseman with 0.82.
Cody Sharib was named AHA Rookie of the Week after recording three points this weekend with a goal and two assists. He notched a power-play goal and an assist in UConn's 8-3 victory over Sacred Heart before tallying an assist in a 5-3 loss at No. 9 Yale on Saturday night.
