ORONO, Maine - Alexandra Garcia (Pointe-Claire, Que.) recorded her third consecutive shutout while Alexandra Vakos (Hamden, Conn.) posted her third game-winning goal in four contests as the University of Connecticut women's ice hockey team defeated Maine, 3-0 this evening at Alfond Arena. With the win UConn improves to 11-13-1 overall and 7-4-1 in Hockey East play, while the Black Bears fall to 9-12-4 (3-8-2).
Vakos gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the first period when she posted an unassisted goal after she picked up a loose puck at center ice and beat Maine's Candice Currier one-on-one. The goal marked her third in the past four games and the second during Hockey East action and would eventually become the game-winner.
Kelly Horan (Methuen, Mass.) and Jennifer Chaisson (Cumberland, Ont.) each capitalized on the skater advantage, scoring a pair of power play goals just over one minute apart at the beginning of the second period to give UConn the 3-0 lead. Horan tipped in the second goal of the game at the 6:15 minute mark after Sami Evelyn (Nepean, Ont.) sent a shot on net from the blueline following a pass up the ice from Maude Blain (Magog, Que.).
The final goal of the game was scored in the eighth minute of the second period as Chaisson carried the puck out from behind the net and passed it off to Evelyn in the left faceoff circle, then passed it back to Chaisson who sent a wrist shot into the back of the net from the far slot. The goal marked the fifth on the season for both Horan and Chaisson, while Chaisson is also now just one point away from becoming the fourth Husky to record 80 career points.
Garcia recorded 31 saves on the night, marking her 11th game with at least 30 saves this season. On the year she has five shutouts and 11 on her career.
For the third straight game the Huskies were perfect on the penalty kill as they held the Black Bears scoreless on three power play opportunities.
The Huskies will complete the season series against Maine tomorrow (Jan. 22) with a 12:00 noon contest at Alfond Arena.
