Huskies Post Seven First Place Finishes At Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team opened the 2011 indoor season today at the Yale Invitational, recording five individual first place finishes and two relay victories.
The first victory of the day came from Tyrone Faverey (Allentown, Pa.) in the triple jump as he recorded a mark of 14.70 meters. Faverey's first place finish was followed up by three more UConn victories as Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.), Kyle Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Mike Rutt (Sinking Spring, Pa.) each won their respective events.
Alleman earned a first place finish in the shot put with a throw of 17.03 meters, beating out the second place finisher by a full meter. Also finishing in the top-10 for UConn in the shot put were Jesse Chapman (East Thetford, Vt.) who finished third (14.94m), Eric Masington (Trevose, Pa.) who placed fifth (14.82m) and Aaron King (Wharton, N.J.) who finished ninth (13.69m).
The Huskies placed three athletes in the top-five in the pole vault, led by Duggan who won the event with a mark of 5.10 meters. Zachary Meverden (Wexford, Pa.) posted a mark of 4.65 meters which was good enough for a third place finish and Dylan Dombrowski (Breezy Point, N.Y.) was right behind him in fourth place (4.65m).
Rutt began his senior season with a victory in the mile run, finishing in 4:11.98, five seconds faster than the next finisher. Joe Clark (West Islip, N.Y.) and Nick Aguila (West Hartford, Conn.) placed fourth and seventh in the mile respectively, recording times of 4:17.75 and 4:20.34.
The final individual victory on the day came from Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) in the high jump as he recorded a jump of 2.09 meters.
The pair of relay victories came from the distance medley relay (10:01.97) and the 4x400 meter relay (3:18.26). The distance medley relay was made up of Alex and Tim Bennatan (Lake Forest, Ill.), Chris Dailey (Dallas, Pa.) and Dan Holst (Smithtown, N.Y.) while the quartet of Kyle Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.), Kyle Twombly (Penfield, N.Y.), Chris Whyte (Rahway, N.J.) and Eric Fontanez (Rochester, N.Y.) ran the 4x400.
Four Huskies made the finals in the 60 meter dash, with Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) leading the way, recording a time of 6.88 for a second place finish, while Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa. - 6.89), Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.- 6.90) and Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn. - 7.19) finished third, fourth and seventh respectively.
Also recording top-five finishes for Connecticut during the invite were Joshua Faboyede (Providence, R.I.) with a third place finish in the weight throw (16.69m), Luke Kuna (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) with a fourth place finish in the long jump (6.51m) and Whyte with a fifth place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (8.44).
The Huskies return to action next week when they host the UConn Heptathlon on Thursday (Jan. 20) and Friday (Jan. 21). Connecticut will also be participating in the Great Dane Invitational which will take place on Friday, which will be held in New York, N.Y.
