STORRS, Conn. - Former University of Connecticut baseball player Brian Esposito was called up to the Houston Astros after 11 seasons in the minor league. Esposito will be in uniform Wednesday afternoon when the Astros host the St. Louis Cardinals at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
Esposito was called up to the big leagues from the Astros Triple-A affiliate the Round Rock Express of the Pacific Coast League. The 31-year-old catcher played one inning on June 2, 2007 for the Cardinals but never got an at-bat before he was optioned back to the minors.
At Round Rock in 2010, Esposito was batting .225 with 11 runs scored, 18 RBI and 34 hits. He joins Jeff Fulchino on the Astros, his Connecticut teammate during his collegiate playing days.
Fulchino is currently 1-0 with the Astros this season with a 5.93 ERA in 39 games played and 41.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 39 batters and given up 27 earned runs.
Jesse Carlson was called back up to the Toronto Blue Jays in August and has played in seven games, while posting a 5.40 ERA. In 6.2 innings of work, he has struck out three batters and allowed four runs.
