MIRAMAR, Fla. - UConn track and field standout Trisha-Ann Hawthorne anchored the Jamaica U23 4x100 meter relay to a silver medal finish on Sunday afternoon at the NACAC Under 23 Championships in Miramar, Fla.
Hawthorne, who ran the anchor leg for Jamaica, received the baton seconds after the first place finishing USA anchor leg was able to start her run, giving the USA a jump start and eventual win.
Jamaica took second place with a time of 44.20, while USA won the event with a time of 43.07.
"I am excited Trisha finished the U23 championship," said UConn associate head coach Clive Terrelonge. "A week ago we didn't think she would be able to run because of her hamstring. She had suffered a few weeks ago back in Jamaica but I'm excited that she made it through and that her injury didn't get any worse. She helped her country get a medal and finished off the year on a very positive note."
Hawthorne also took fifth place in the 100 meter dash on Friday with a time of 11.53. She finished the semifinals on Friday morning with a second place time of 11.77 in the second heat of the event to move into the finals later in the day.
"I am very proud of Trisha on how she ran both the indoor and outdoor seasons and then how she finished in the championship while representing Jamaica with her fifth place finish," added Terrelonge. "She's done a tremendous job throughout the season and continued to compete at a high level all year."
