STORRS, Conn. - Trisha-Ann Hawthorne ran her personal best in the 100 meter dash to earn a spot on the Jamaica National Team at her first National Championship in Jamaica over the weekend. Hawthorne will compete for the Jamaica U23 National Team at both the NACAC as well as the CAC Games in July.
Hawthorne finished in fourth place in the semifinal round with a time of 11.39, qualifying for the 100-meter finals. In the finals, she took fourth, just out of reach of the podium, finishing with a personal-best time of 11.31. Sherone Simpson won the race with a time of 11.12. Hawthorne was the second finisher in the 100m from the U23 group. Hawthorne did not compete in the 200 meter at the meet but will compete in the event for the national team in July.
"I am proud of the way Trisha handled her first championship in Jamaica," said UConn associate head coach Clive Terrelonge. "To go there, in that environment, with those talented sprinters in Jamaica at a national championship and to make the national team, is just a tremendous feat for her. I'm even more proud at the fact that she ran the semis without a full warm-up, due to event time changes."
"Then she did a tremendous job in the final by finishing fourth among some great sprinters," added Terrelonge. "I am just extremely proud of her for being able to get this done at her first national championship in Jamaica."
Hawthorne will begin competition with the Jamaica National Team July 9-11 at the 2010 NACAC U23 Track and Field Championships in Miramar, Fla. On July 22-28, Hawthorne will also compete for the national team in Mayaquez, Puerto Rico in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games.
Over the course of the weekend, three current or former University of Connecticut women's track athletes competed at the USATF Championship as Emma Crowcroft, Carin Knight and Diedre Mullen participated.
Crowcroft was the first Husky to compete when she took part in the junior women's javelin on Friday, June 25 in Des Moines, Iowa at the USA Track and Field Championship. Crowcroft, who just completed her freshman season, finished 11th at the meet with a throw of 40.01 meters (131-3) in a field of 15. Allison Updike (unattached) took the title home with her outstanding toss of 50.95 meters (167-2), the only competitor to throw over 50 meters.
Knight and Mullen's competition began Saturday, June 26 in the high jump. Mullen, a Nike represented athlete who was ranked fourth entering the competition, finished in fourth place with a height of 1.88 meters (6-2). Knight took 10th place with her jump of 1.75 meters (5-8.75). Chaunte Lowe took home the high jump title with an American-best height of 2.05 meters (6-8.75), breaking her own previous record of 2.04 meters (6-8.25).
