STORRS, Conn. - Coming off of their first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championship, University of Connecticut mid-distance runners Brian Gagnon and Mike Rutt will head out to their second-straight USATF Championship on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Gagnon and Rutt will both compete in the 800-meter run at the meet which will begin with the first round on Thursday, June 24 at 5:05 p.m. The semi-final round will be run on Friday at 7:30 p.m. with the finals taking part on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
"Brian is looking to finish his UConn career in style by making his second USATF final, and first outdoor," said Head Coach Greg Roy. "Mike will also be looking to make his second trip to the USATF final, and second-straight outdoors. With finishes of fourth and sixth respectively in their first USATF finals, both Brian and Mike are competing at a level that puts them in contention for berths on future Olympic and World Championship US teams. Clearly the top-two middle distance runners to ever don the UConn singlet and shorts, these types of competitions are just the beginning for them rather than the end."
Last season, Gagnon took an early exit at the meet with a 20th place finish in the first round with a time of 1:49.21. Gagnon was the third overall collegiate runner to cross the line. Rutt used a seventh place, 1:48.24 finish in the first round to advance to the semifinals where he moved onto the final round after taking eighth with a time of 1:48.01. He was just one of two collegiate runners to advance to the final round. Rutt finished the race sixth overall with a time of 1:47.57, the top-three moved onto the World Championship in Berlin.
