GREENSBORO, N.C. - With personal record times in the 800-meter run, both Mike Rutt and Brian Gagnon advance to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. after day two competition at the NCAA East Regional on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
Rutt and Gagnon both ran in the fastest heat of the day as all four athletes in heat three came across the line under 1:47. Rutt finished third overall and third in the heat with a time of 1:46.63 while Gagnon took fourth in the heat and sixth overall crossing the line in 1:46.99.
This will be Rutt and Gagnon's first trip to the NCAA Championship, but both athletes have competed previously at Hayward Field as they took part in the 2009 USA Track and Field National Championship last summer.
Nearly making the cut, Mike Alleman, in his first NCAA East Regional, took 15th place in the shot put with a toss of 17.65 meters (57-11). Alleman was just three spots shy of advancing to Eugene, Ore.
Marquis Thomas was the final competitor on the day for the Huskies as he competed in his third and final NCAA East Regional in the high jump. Thomas took 26th place on the day finishing with a height of 2.06 meters.
Competition was suspended due to the weather prior to the steeplechase, so Will Sanders will have to wait until Saturday to compete in his first NCAA East Regional. The senior will be joined by Tyrone Faverey (triple jump) as the final Husky athletes to compete in the East Regional.
