Rutt, Gagnon Advance To 800 Meter Quarterfinal Round

GREENSBORO, N.C. - After day one, two University of Connecticut athletes have advanced to the next round of the NCAA Tournament in Greensboro, N.C.
Mike Rutt and Brian Gagnon, both 800 meter runners each won their heat and in doing so qualified for the quarterfinal round race to take place on Friday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m. The top three finishes in each heat and the next three best times will move onto the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. during the weekend of June 10-12.
Rutt finished with the fastest time in the prelims taking first in 1:48.40. Gagnon earned the fastest time in his heat and 16th overall coming across in 1:49.48.
Also competing on the day were Anthony Burris and Chris Whyte in the 400 meter hurdles. Burris finished in 37th place with a time of 53.23 seconds while Whyte, in his first NCAA Championship took 39th place with a time of 54.20 seconds.
The final competitor for the Huskies on the day was Kyle Duggan who competed in the pole vault. Duggan did not register a height at the meet. The bar was set high for the competitors beginning at 4.80 meters (15-9).
More UConn athletes will compete on Friday looking for a spot at the NCAA Championships.
