Huskies Take Fourth At BIG EAST Championship

CINCINNATI, Ohio - After three days of competition, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team finished the BIG EAST Championship in fourth place with 100.50 points. After defending his decathlon title on Saturday, Sean Smith was named the 2010 BIG EAST Outstanding Field Performer.
In a tight field, Notre Dame won their third-straight Outdoor Track and Field title finishing with 123 points. Coming in second was Louisville with 114 and Rutgers rounded out the top three with 112 points.
The Huskies brought home three titles from the meet with Smith earning his second-straight decathlon title. The Huskies mid-distance runners helped UConn to two more first place performances with Brian Gagnon earning his second 800 meter outdoor title and first since 2007. The 4 x 800 meter relay team also brought home the victory finishing in a time of 7:27.13.
Also doing well in the 800 meter run was Michael Rutt who finished just behind Gagnon in second place coming across in a time of 1:50.07.
Also running in the finals on Sunday was rookie Chris Whyte who finished eighth in his first BIG EAST Outdoor meet in the 400 meter hurdles. Whyte crossed the line with a time of 54.08.
Will Sanders competed in the 5000 meter run finishing with an outstanding time of 14:16.10 for an eighth place finish adding to the Husky point total.
The Husky relay teams were successful on the day with each team earning points towards the total. The 4x800 relay team took first, the 4x400 relay team earned fourth place with a time of 3:12.23 and the 4x100 relay team finished with their best time of the season taking fifth with a time of 41.30 seconds.
On the field side of things, Kyle Duggan continued his success in the pole vault earning second place with a height of 5.15 meters (16-10.75). Zach Meverden also contributed to the point total in the pole vault launching himself 4.80 meters (15-9) for an eighth place finish.
Aaron King and Tyrone Faverey earned points in the triple jump for the Huskies finishing with distances of 14.98 meters (49-1.75) and 14.63 meters (48) respectively. King took fifth place while Faverey finished in eighth.
The Huskies continue their outdoor season at the New England Championship on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8 in Boston, Mass.
