Defending Champion Smith In First Place After Day One

CINCINNATI, Ohio - After day one of competition in the decathlon, University of Connecticut senior Sean Smith sits in first place with 3,900 points. He is followed closely by Jake Waruch who is in second with 3,669 points and Justin Schneider of Notre Dame rounds out the top three with 3,645 points.
UConn's other competitors Kyle Rowbotham, Ben Waruch and Sam Smith are in seventh, 10th and 13th place respectively after day one competiton.
Smith dominated the field events of the decathlon, earning the top marks in the long jump (7.05 meters), shot put (12.99 meters) and high jump (2.00 meters). In the long jump, the senior was the only competitor to pass the seven-meter mark, while in the high jump, he was the only athlete to eclipse the bar at two meters.
