Huskies Sneak Past BU 10-9

BOSTON, Mass. - A five run first inning and a heads-up play by Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) got the University of Connecticut softball team past Boston University 10-9 Thursday. Both Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) and Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) were 3-for-5 on the day in the victory.
With a two-run Connecticut lead, BU had runners on first and second and two outs on the board in the bottom of the seventh. April Setterlund knocked a single to right scoring Rachel Hebert and got caught in a rundown between first and second. Erica Casacci rounded third headed for home to try and score the game-tying run, but Roy realized what was happening and fired a strike to Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.) to gun down the runner and escape with the victory.
The win is the fourth-straight for the Huskies as they improve to 14-18 on the season. Boston University drops their second-straight game falling to 18-12 on the year.
The Huskies batted around in the first inning jumping out to a five-run lead. Towers started things off with a homerun to deep right centerfield. Five singles, a sacrifice bunt, two fielder's choices and two walks later and the Huskies put five on the board before even taking the field.
The Huskies added to their lead in the third. Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) led things off with a walk and two batters later was driven in on a double by Towers. Towers came across, for the second time on the day on a single to left center by DeLuca which extended the Huskies lead to seven.
In the bottom half of the frame, starting pitcher Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) ran into some trouble letting up four runs to the Terriers in a inning capped off by a three-run homerun to right center by Rachel Moeller, slimming the Huskies lead down to just three.
UConn put a couple more runs on the board in the top of the fifth. Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) started things off with a single to left field, stealing second during Towers' at bat. Towers moved Ward up one more base on a double through the right side and the sophomore came home on a ground out to short stop by Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.). An error by the first baseman allowed Towers to score and extend the Huskies lead to five.
The Terriers responded in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own. Setterlund, who has the highest batting average in the nation, began things with a single, advancing all the way to third on an error by the Huskies' centerfielder. She was brought home by Caitlin Rentler, who later crossed the plate bringing the score to 9-6.
The Huskies put an important run on the board in the top half of the sixth when, after a double to right center by Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.), pinch runner Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.) crossed the plate for the Huskies. The run was the eventual game-winner for UConn and was driven in by Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.)
BU earned two runs in the bottom of the sixth and was en route to trying to tie things up in the seventh when Roy's heads up play ended things once and for all.
Sullivan earned her fifth victory of the season. Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) came into the game in the third for the Huskies pitching 3.1 innings while striking out four and Adelman finished out the final inning of play earning her third save of the season.
The Huskies return to BIG EAST play on Saturday, April 10 when they head to Rutgers for a three-game weekend series. Game play will begin at Noon.
