PROVIDENCE, R.I. - After a stellar display at the 116th annual Penn Relays, University of Connecticut sophomore Michael Alleman and senior Brian Gagnon were named the BIG EAST Field and Track Athletes of the Week respectively.
Alleman earns his honor after improving upon his NCAA score in the shot put with a 17.67 meter throw and first place finish. His shot put throw was his best of the season improving his NCAA mark and putting him 19th in the east region and 31st in the country. His throw ranks in a tie for third place in the BIG EAST with Tim Nedow of DePaul.
Gagnon helped lead the Huskies to a school record-breaking time in the 4x800 meter relay. The senior ran the third leg of the race in 1:48.49 to push UConn to a 7:18.58 finish. Connecticut's time broke an 11-year school record, while Gagnon's mark was the eighth-fastest leg in a field of 52 runners, and fastest by a runner in the third slot.
These awards are the first of the season for the Huskies and come during the final week of weekly awards leading up to the BIG EAST Championship on April 30 to May 2 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
