Huskies Dominate Dogfight With Albany 122-78

STORRS, Conn. - Behind 15 first place showings in 19 events, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team earned the outright 122-78 victory over Albany in The Dogfight at George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex Saturday.
From the beginning, the Huskies held the clear advantage in the meet and with their stellar team performance came four outstanding individual performances on the day.
Kyle Duggan had UConn's best performance on the day in the pole vault clearing a height of 5.21 meters. He upped his NCAA qualifying score by .08 meters jumping him from 20th place in the east and 35th nationally to 11th in the east and 21st nationally.
Brian Gagnon's performance in the 800 meter run jumped him to the top-10 in the east regional as he finished in a time of 1:49.03, decisively winning in his first 800 meter collegiate race in over a year.
Mike Alleman was also stellar on the day earning two first place performances in the discus and shot put. Allemans toss of 17.40 meters in the shot put was an NCAA qualifier while he also bested his closest competitor by 3.86 meters. In the discus, Alleman took home first with a throw of 49.67 meters, also an NCAA qualifier.
Patrick Sampson dominated his competition in the hammer throw with a first place toss of 57.01 meters. He bested his opponents 5.10 meters, nearly matching his season best toss of 57.39 meters set in the first week of competition at the Jerry Gravel Classic.
UConn's other first place finishes on the field side of things came in the javelin as Eric Alfiere launched a throw of 58.74 meters and Marquis Thomas leaped 2.04 meters in the high jump for the victory.
On the field side of things, Scott Johnson started the day with a first place finish in the steeplechase with a time of 9:24.98. The Connecticut 4x100 meter relay team earned the second first place showing with a time of 41.30 seconds, their best of the season.
Will Sanders and Michael Rutt went one-two in a photo finish in the 1500 meter run as Sanders edged Rutt by .02 seconds with a time of 3:53.43. Chris Whyte earned the Huskies fourth-straight first place track finish in the 110 meter hurdles crossing the line with a time of 14.67 seconds.
After Steven Rochester narrowly lost out on first place by .03 seconds by finishing the 400 meter dash in a time of 48.51, Jesse Drinks added another title to the pile with an NCAA qualifying time of 10.52 seconds in the 100 meter dash. Kevin Steinberg finished right behind him with a 10.62 second showing.
Brian Gagnon added his 800 meter performance followed by a first place finish by Anthony Burris in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 53.58 seconds.
Kevin Steinberg narrowly missed out on first and finished the 200 meter dash with a time of 21. 94 seconds. But Sanders ended the individual events on a high note as he lapped runners en route to his 14:33.35 finish in the 5000 meter run bettering his closest opponent by over 30 seconds.
The Huskies look to take this momentum into the World Famous Penn Relays next Thursday to Saturday April 22-24. Some of the Huskies will also be competing at the Wildcat Invitational on April 24 in Durham, N.H.
