STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team held their annual Academic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday night to honor the women's cross country and track & field team members for their academic excellence throughout the year.
The guest speaker for the award ceremony was celebrated author Dr. Regina Barreca, who serves as a UConn professor, editor, advisor and accomplished author. Dr. Barreca was a part of the first women's graduating class from Dartmouth University in 1979 and has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show numerous times, 20/20 and the Today Show.
"Dr. Barreca inspired and amused the team with her anecdotes and wisdom," said head coach Bill Morgan. "She is an outstanding role model for our young female student-athletes and we are privileged that she was able to speak to our group."
The team's award ceremony included honors such as the Learning Groups Academic Achievement Award, which was given to student-athletes with a 3.3 or better semester GAP. Those making the Dean's List were athletes earning a GAP varying between 3.4 to 4.0, depending on the individual school or college in the University. They would need to finish in the top 25-percent in each school or college. Those who received a GPA of 3.0 or better, were named to the Director of Athletics Honor Roll.
There were 67 individual awards distributed to the team members in connection with their GPA earned either in the spring or fall (2009) semesters this year. Dr. Barreca congratulated each award winner individually as she presented them with their awards.
Additionally,Phylicia George was named the University of Connecticut's Female BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete award winner for the 2009-10 academic year.
