STORRS, Conn. - The top of the University of Connecticut softball team line up combined for 13 of the Huskies' 14 hits on the day in a 12-4 rout of Dartmouth Wednesday.
UConn was led by Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) who had five RBIs and three runs scored and Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) who was 4-for-5 missing out on the cycle by just a double. Duclos was 3-for-5 on the day with two of her hits leaving the park.
Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) was on point and started the game by striking out the first two batters she faced in a one-two-three top of the first inning. Sullivan pitched six full innings allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven.
The Huskies came out swinging early. Towers and Duclos opened up the game with consecutive singles. Towers scored with heads up running on a fielder's choice off the bat of Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.). Sloppy play by the Big Green led to another run as first baseman Alyssa Parker was unable to handle the throw from third baseman Noelle Ramirez and after one full inning of play the Huskies held an early 2-0 lead.
It looked like it was going to be a quick inning for Dartmouth's pitcher Kat Hicks, but with two outs in the bottom of the second Towers got the Huskies offense rolling with a hard single to centerfield. Duclos followed with a towering homerun over the left field fence to put the Huskies in control 4-0.
Sullivan found herself in trouble in the top of the 4th inning but was able to work out of the inning while only allowing one run. Towers led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple down the right field line. Duclos doubled her home and the Huskies were in business once again. Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) singled home Duclos and UConn was able to manufacture one more run to give themselves a 7-1 advantage after four innings.
Dartmouth came to life in the top of the fifth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Hillary Hubert and Leigha Clarkson collected two out singles off of Sullivan. It was then that Noelle Ramirez brought the Big Green back into the mix with one swing as sent a pitch over the left field fence. Dartmouth cut the Husky lead to 7-4.
In the bottom of the fifth UConn got two runs back, opening things up with a solo shot by Towers, her third part of the cycle. DeLuca reached base on a single to left field and moved over to third after a shot up the middle by Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.). An error by the Big Green centerfielder pushed the Huskies up one more base and DeLuca came across the plate as Vaughan grounded out to second.
UConn solidified the win in the bottom of the sixth on a three run blast to left centerfield by Duclos, her second roundtripper of the game. The shot ended things as the Huskies mercy ruled Dartmouth with a 12-4 victory after six and two thirds innings.
Connecticut returns to action at home on Friday when they take on UMass at the Burrill Family Field.
