PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Some late runs by Rutgers pushed the Scarlet Knights past the University of Connecticut softball team Sunday in the finale of the weekend series 3-0. RU avoided the weekend sweep tallying runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Starting pitcher Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) pitched the whole game for the Huskies, allowing two earned runs and just six hits.
The Huskies drop to 16-19 on the year and halt their six game win streak, falling to 4-5 in BIG EAST play. Rutgers improves to 13-21 and earns their first BIG EAST win of the year improving to 1-4.
In the third, Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) made a diving stab that saved a would be double and could have potentially scored the go ahead run. The ball was tailing away from Ward as she lunged across her body to make the second out of the inning. Saveriano notched a strikeout to end inning and the threat.
Lindsay Curran tagged a one-out hit that landed just inside the left field line and moved over to second base on an overthrow back into the infield. On a bouncing ground ball to the left side, Curran moved up to third and scored on a wild pitch to garner the first run of the game giving the Scarlet Knights a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth.
Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) tagged a two-out shot to deep centerfield in the following inning trying to start something for the Huskies, but could advance any further.
The Scarlet Knights got their first two batters on base in the bottom of the sixth on a single to centerfield and a rip up the middle. Kaci Madden advanced the runners on a push bunt to second base and one batter later, Jen Harabedian brought in two more insurance runs for Rutgers on a single to left field. Harabedian was gunned down on a heads up play by Amanda Martin (Rowley, Mass.) who threw out the second baseman as she was trying to advance to second on the throw home. A foul out for the next batter ended the inning, but the Scarlet Knights had a three-run lead heading into the final inning of play.
With two outs on the board, pinch hitter Jessica McDermott (Clarksburg, N.J.) notched a single up the middle to keep the Huskies alive. Ward reentered the game to run for McDermott and one batter later, Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) roped a single to right field to keep the game alive. But a ground out to short stop would end things as the Scarlet Knights finished with the 3-0 victory
The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, April 13 when they take on Quinnipiac in Storrs, Conn. in what will be a make up game that got rained out on March 30. Action begins at 4 p.m.
