CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - A complete game shutout by Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) and a 3-for-4 effort by Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) helped the University of Connecticut softball team to a 7-0 victory over Boston College Thursday. The Huskies belted out nine hits on the day.
Freshman ace Saveriano (5-5) allowed just two hits on the day while also striking out 11 batters, a career best. Maria Pandolfo broke up the no hit bid in the bottom of the third inning with a single while Rene Delagrammaticas got the Eagles other hit in the sixth inning.
Towers went 3-for-4 on the day driving in two runs while scoring each time that she was on base. She capped off her day with a two-run homerun in the fourth inning to give the Huskies a seven-run lead.
With the win the Huskies stop a five-game skid and improve their record to 7-14 on the year. BC drops to 9-11 on the year and has fallen in back-to-back games to UConn.
The Huskies began things with a bang scoring four runs on four hits in the first inning. UConn led off with back-to-back singles off of BC starter Taylor Peyton. Towers began things off with a single to left field advancing to second on an error by the leftfielder. She was moved over to third base on a single through the right side by Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.).
An RBI single to left center by Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) brought in UConn's second run of the inning and a double to deep centerfield by Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) brought around Vaughan and Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.), who reached base via a walk bringing the Huskies' lead to four.
In the second inning, the Huskies got another run across the board as Towers crossed the plate for the second time on the day scoring on a single by Duclos, scoring on another error on the Eagle leftfielder. In the fourth inning, after Jennifer Ward (Waterford, Conn.) got on base on a single to second, she was brought home just one batter later as Towers blasted her round tripper to centerfield.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday when they will host both their home opener and BIG EAST opener in a doubleheader against Georgetown Saturday, March 27 at Noon.
