HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - In its final game of the Hofstra Tournament, Sunday, the University of Connecticut softball team fell 5-1 to the host team of Hofstra University. The game marked the end of regular season tournament play for the Huskies.
With the loss UConn drops to 6-14 on the year while Hofstra improves their impressive record to 13-4 this season.
The Pride had a baserunner in every inning of the game other than the fifth scattering 11 hits throughout the ballpark. They put their first run of the day on the board in the second when Tessa Ziemba ripped a homerun to left field adding another run to their total.
The Huskies got their lone run of the game in the fifth inning. Jessica Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) got things started with a single down the right field line. She was able to advance all the way to third base during Amanda Martin's (Rowley, Mass.) at bat on two separate wild pitches, Martin eventually walked.
Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) laid down her sixth sacrifice bunt of the season moving Martin over and one batter later Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) ripped a shot to deep centerfield that looked like it would drive in the two Husky baserunners to tie things up at two-all. Instead, Kris Root, the Pride's 5' 10" centerfielder, made a leaping over the shoulder catch with her back to home plate which only allowed Arremony to cross the plate and Hofstra kept their one-run advantage.
In the top of the sixth, the Pride piled on three more runs to their total and made their lead four runs, a sum that the Huskies could just not overcome as they went on to fall 5-1.
UConn returns to action in their home opener on Wednesday, March 24 against Sacred Heart. Action begins at 2:30 p.m.
