FT. MYERS, Fla. - A walkoff single by Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) in the bottom of the eighth inning handed the University of Connecticut softball team their first victory of the 2010 season. The Huskies earned a 1-0 decision over Minnesota in their final game of the Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational.
After beginning the eighth inning, both teams started their half inning off with a runner on second base. The runner placed on second was the final batter out the inning before. For the Huskies, Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) began the inning at second, advancing over to third base on a ground out to shortstop by Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.). One batter later she was knocked in by Vaughan, who earned her first RBI of the year and her first game-winning hit of her career.
With the victory, the Huskies finish their opening weekend of play 1-3. They split with Minnesota and dropped games to the host team Florida Gulf Coast and Georgia Southern. The Gophers dropped to 6-9 on the season.
The Huskies had a runner on in six of the eight innings despite only three hits on the day. Vaughan had two of those three hits going 2-for-4 on the day. The other Husky with a hit against Minnesota was Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) who was 1-for-2 reaching base three times after being hit by a pitch in the first inning and walking in the eighth.
Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) threw a two-hitter for the Huskies pitching all eight innings, walking three and striking out five in the shutout, the first of her career.
The Huskies return to the diamond next weekend at the Florida Atlantic Tournament when they take on Florida A&M and Miami (Oh) on Friday, March 5 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
