Huskies Win Fifth Straight New England Championship

BOSTON, Mass. - For the fifth-straight year, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team won the New England Indoor Championship in dominating fashion. The Huskies finished the weekend with 140 points and five first place finishes. UConn outscored their closest opponent, Rhode Island, by 71 points.
The Huskies recorded points in 14 of the 16 events that they competed in, earning multiple points in eight of the events.
One of UConn's five titles came in the heptathlon as Kyle Rowbotham (Scotch Plains, N.J.) took first place easily with 4,637 points recorded. Jamaal Smith (Albany, N.Y.) also took first for the Huskies in the triple jump finishing with a distance of 14.98 meters. Also earning points in the triple jump was Tyrone Faverey (Allentown, Pa.) who finished third with a distance of 14.58.
The final two individual titles came via a one-two finish in the mid-distance events. First, in the 800 meter run, Alex and Tim Bennatan (Lake Forest, Ill.) came across the line one after the other with times of 1:52.08 and 1:52.14 respectively. In the 1000 meter run, Michael DaPice (White Plains, N.Y.) and Scott Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) finished one-two crossing the line immediately after one another in 2:28.99 and 2:29.00 respectively.
The final title came via the 4 x 800 meter relay team of the Bennatan twins, Johnson and Dan Holst (Smithtown, N.Y.) who finished in first with a time of 7:40.40.
Also with top-four finishes for the Huskies were Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.) in the weight throw with a toss of 16.53 meters, Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa.) in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.80, Chris Whyte (Rahway, N.J.) in the 500 meter dash crossing the line in 1:03.83 and the distance medley relay team who finished second in a time of 9:56.13.
Steinberg also placed in the top three in the 55 meter dash finishing milliseconds behind teammate Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.). Drinks crossed the line in 6.426 seconds while Steinberg crossed at 6.430 as both Huskies earned points towards the team total.
Rounding out the top five are New Hampshire in third with 60 points, Southern Connecticut State in fourth with 58 points and American International in the five spot with 47 points.
Many of the Huskies will be back in action next weekend at the IC4A Championship which will be held in Boston, Mass. back at the Boston University Track and Field Center.
