Huskies Take Fifth At BIG EAST Championship

NEW YORK - After day two of competition, the University of Connecticut men's track and field team finished competition in fifth place with a combined points total of 75.5. Notre Dame, the leader after day one, earned its first BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championship since 2007 finishing with 146.5 points, its highest point tally in program history.
Eight different Huskies earned All-BIG EAST honors with their top-three performances. Both Jake and Ben Waruch (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) finished in the top-3 in the heptathlon. Jake Waruch smashed his personal best finishing in second place with a combined point total of 5,094. Ben Waruch took third place with a score of 4,968.
Also finishing in the top-3 was Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa.) in the 200 meter dash. Steinberg crossed the line in third place with a personal best time of 21.72 seconds. Jamaal Smith (Albany, N.Y.) finished third in the triple jump also setting a personal best with a launch of 15.15 meters.
The final group of athletes finishing with an All-BIG EAST time was the 4x800 meter relay team of Dan Holst (Smithtown, N.Y.), Alex and Tim Bennatan (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Scott Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) who took third in the relay with a time of 7:32.71.
Of the 16 athletes competing in individual events on the day, 11 of them finished with an IC4A qualifying time. Jake and Ben Waruch and Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) all qualified in the heptathlon. Smith finished the event with 4,834 points.
Steinberg's fifth place performance of 6.85 seconds, Steven Rochester's (Danbury, Conn.) fifth place performance in the 500 meter dash of 1:03.78, Johnson's run of 4:12.35 in the mile run and Alex Bennatan's fifth place finish in the 1000 meter run in a time of 2:26.33 all were IC4A qualifiers.
On the field side of things, Tyrone Faverey (Allentown, Pa.) took fifth place in the high jump leaping a personal best 2.06 meters to qualify for the IC4A Championship. Jamaal Smith qualified with his triple jump performance and Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.), who finished the shot put in fourth place with a season best toss of 16.94 meters, also qualified for the Championship.
Notre Dame took the victory, Georgetown finished second with a score of 104 points, Louisville finished third with 93 points after finishing day one in second place, Villanova finished fourth with a tally of 76.5 and the Huskies rounded out the pack with their 75.5 points totaled.
