STORRS, Conn. - A power play goal by Brad Cooper (Boca Raton, Fla.) at the end of the first period proved to be the game winner as the University of Connecticut men's hockey team rolled on Bentley in a 4-1 decisive victory in front of 719 fans at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum, Friday.
Two Huskies recorded multi-point efforts in front of a boisterous crowd of children from the Husky Sport program as well as many college fans. Both Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) notched two points on the night in the form of a goal and an assist.
With the victory the Huskies improve to 5-23-3 overall and 5-17-3 in Atlantic Hockey play while Bentley drops to 11-17-3 overall and 9-14-2 in AHA action.
After a delayed start to the game, the Huskies came out firing. UConn was the first to get on the board when Hernandez flicked a shot past Bentley goaltender Kyle Rank at 5:47 in the opening period. Hernandez was aided by Jason Krispel (Cypress, Calif.) who notched his team leading ninth assist of the season and Olson who recorded his seventh assist of the year.
Bentley fired back at 9:14 when they scored the first power play goal of the night. Erik Peterson got the goal for the Falcons who took advantage of the man-up situation with just 16 seconds into the power play.
Before the end of the period, however, the Huskies would retake the lead as Cooper would fire in a power play goal from the point after a couple quick passes from Chris Waterstradt (Tulsa, Okla.) and Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, B.C.). The goal was the second of the season for Cooper while Waterstradt and Ranallo tallied their fifth assists of the year.
In the second period, the Huskies continued to add to their lead. At 9:27, Hernandez won the faceoff scooping up the puck, wrapping it around the back of the net and dishing a pass to Olson who fired a shot to the top left corner of the net. Both Hernandez and Olson recorded their second point of the night on the goal.
Before the end of the period was over, UConn added another goal to the total, this time on a shorthanded opportunity at 18:37. Tom Janosz (Elma, N.Y.) started things off for the Huskies in their defensive third firing the puck up the left side of the ice to Dan Naurato (Livonia, Mich.). Naurato dished a pass off to Waterstradt who recorded his first shorthanded goal of the season. The assist was Naurato's second shorthanded point of the year.
The Huskies held off Bentley's attack in the third period to finish the game with the 4-1 victory, their fifth of the season. Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) was stellar in goal for the Huskies making 13 saves on the night.
The Huskies would like to thank those who attended on the night and would like to welcome them back for their final weekend of regular season action when they take on Canisius next weekend!
The Huskies are back in action Saturday night in the second half of the home-and-home series with Bentley. They will be playing at the Ryan Skating Rink in Waltham, Mass. and the puck will drop at 7:05 p.m.
