Huskies Fall To Niagara In Overtime, 4-3

Storrs, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team suffered a 4-3 defeat in overtime at Niagara tonight, dropping to 3-7-3 (3-4-1 AHA) on the season. Freshman Jordan Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.) registered a goal and an assist on the night. Sophomore goaltender Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) made 42 stops in the loss.
Niagara is receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com national poll and sees its record improve to 9-5-2 (7-3-0 AHA).
The Huskies notched two third-period goals to even the score at 3-3 but the Purple Eagles found the back of the net with only 34 seconds remaining in overtime to secure the victory and two points in the AHA standings.
A pair of UConn freshmen combined for the games opening goal at 2:34 of the second period. After a pass from Sims, classmate Rui Encarnacao (White Plains, N.Y.) deposited his first collegiate goal to put UConn ahead, 1-0. Sims earned his fourth assist on the play.
Niagara would tally the next three scores to make it 3-1 on goals from Giancarlo Iurio, Scott Arnold and Ryan Rashid. After two periods, the Huskies were down in shots, 32-17.
UConn would start its furious comeback with Sims' strike at 6:50. Junior Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, B.C.) set up Sims with his third helper on the year. The goal to make it 3-2 was Sims' fourth on the year.
Just 1:07 later at 7:57, the Huskies evened the score at 3-3. Senior Matt Miller (Bayonne, N.J.) put home his first goal of the season with the assist credited to Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.). Ambrosie upped his team high to 11 points with the assist.
The Huskies were outshot in overtime, 4-2, and gave up the deciding goal with only 34 seconds remaining in the extra stanza. Iurio buried his second of the game to give the home team the victory.
The two teams will finish the weekend series with a 7:05 p.m. contest at Dwyer Arena in Niagara University, N.Y. on Saturday night.
