BOSTON, Mass. - University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall was named the Head Coach of the Year on Thursday by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston. Founded in 1932, the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston promotes the game of football in New England at all levels and nurtures the ideals of citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, and athletic and academic achievement.
Edsall, who also won this award in 2007, earned the honor for the NCAA Bowl/Championship Divisions while JB Wells of Endicott College was honored in Divisions II/III. Edsall led UConn to a regular season record of 8-4 as the Huskies won the BIG EAST Championship and will take on Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on January 1, 2011. The game will mark UConn's first appearance in a BCS game as the Huskies become the first-ever New England institution to play in the BCS and just the second in the New England and "tri-state" region (also includes New York and New Jersey).
Edsall was also named the 2010 BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year.
Edsall will receive his award at the Club's annual dinner on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Westin Waltham Hotel. Tickets are $50 each or $500 for a table of ten. They may be ordered online at www.gridclubofgreaterboston.com or by calling club secretary Dick Lawrence at (781) 231-0372. Social hour begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:00.
BIG EAST umpire Ron Kumiega will receive the Joseph V. McKenney Award given for the top collegiate football official in the region.
