STORRS, Conn. - The No. 5 University of Connecticut field hockey team has earned an at-large bid into the 2010 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship and will face No. 9 American University on Saturday, November 13 in College Park, Md. at 2 p.m. in the First Round. The winner of the UConn vs. American contest will square-off against either No. 1 Maryland or No. 18 Massachusetts on Sunday at 2 p.m. in College Park.
American, the Patriot League Champion, comes into the contest with an 18-3 overall record and is fresh off a 3-2 victory over Kent State in today's play-in game.
UConn has met American on two previous occasions with the Huskies winning both of those contests. Most recently, Connecticut defeated American by a 3-1 count on September 5, 1998.
The Huskies, who finished with a 15-5 overall record, earned one of only eight at-large berths into the NCAA Tournament. The team is appearing in its 22nd NCAA Tournament and owns an all-time mark of 25-19 in NCAA postseason action. Connecticut is 14-7 all-time in NCAA Tournament first round games.
Connecticut has qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of the last nine seasons and 14 of the last 15 overall.
The Huskies are familiar with College Park as the team traveled to Maryland for the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Connecticut lost a 3-2 decision to Drexel in last year's first round.
The Huskies have advanced to the national semifinals nine times in the program's history, most recently in 2007, and won the 1981 and 1985 national championship.
