Melissa Gonzalez Named Mideast Region Player of the Year

STORRS, Conn. - Senior midfielder Melissa Gonzalez, who was honored along with six of her teammates as a 2010 All-Mideast Region selection yesterday, has been named Mideast Region Player of the Year as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Friday, November 19.
Gonzalez, who became the fifth Husky to be honored as an All-Region selection four times yesterday, was an NFHCA First Team All-American in 2009 and earned Third Team status in 2008.
The Mohegan Lake, N.Y. native started all 22 of UConn's games in the midfield, scoring two goals and dishing out four assists. Gonzalez, the 2010 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, led the Huskies to a 16-6 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Big East play. A 2010 Big East First Team selection, Gonzalez led the Huskies to the NCAA Tournament in each of her four years, including a trip to the Quarterfinals this past season.
She also earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2009 and spent the summer of 2010 playing for the United States National Team. Gonzalez led the Huskies to 73 wins in her four years and one trip to the NCAA Semifinal.
