Huskies to Host DePaul in BIG EAST First Round Action

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The UConn men's soccer team finished the 2010 regular season in third place in the BIG EAST Blue Division with an overall record of 11-2-4 and a conference record of 5-1-3. With its third place seeding, the Huskies will host No. 6 (Red) DePaul in the first round of the 2010 BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 4.
The first-round contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Morrone Stadium. Tickets can be purchased from the UConn ticket office by visiting UConnHuskies.com or by phone by calling 860-486-2724 or toll free at 877-AT-UCONN.
The winner of the Thursday night contest will face Cincinnati on Sunday, Nov. 7 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The time for that match has yet to be determined.
Louisville (14-0-2, 9-0-0 BIG EAST) earns a first-round bye after clinching top seeding in the Red Division. The Cardinals are unbeaten this season and have clinched the regular season title for the second-straight year.
Georgetown (7-4-6, 7-1-0 BIG EAST) captured the Blue Division's top seed and first-round bye after posting a nine-game win streak, prior to a 3-0 loss at Notre Dame on Oct. 31, the longest for the program since 1994.
The Red Division No. 6 seed DePaul will play at the Blue Division No. 3 seed UConn. Entering the final weekend of play, UConn was ranked sixth in all national polls, led the nation in team goals against average (0.25) and save percentage (.927) and was second in shutout percentage (0.73). Huskies' goalkeeper Josh Ford was ranked first with a .926 saves percentage. DePaul is coming off a 3-0 victory at Rutgers on Oct. 30. The Blue Demons are led by Alex Mangan, who has 14 points on six goals. DePaul and Connecticut did not meet this season.
No. 2 Cincinnati (7-4-6, 5-1-3 BIG EAST) will play the winner of DePaul/Connecticut in the quarterfinals. Cincinnati defeated Syracuse 4-0 on Oct. 30 to seal the second seed in the Red Division, which comes with a first-round bye.
The Blue Division's No. 6 seed, Marquette (6-7-4, 3-4-2 BIG EAST), will play at No. 3 (Red) St. John's (10-5-2, 4-3-2 BIG EAST) in first round action on Wednesday, Nov. 3.
The winner between the Red Storm and Golden Eagles will travel to Notre Dame for the quarterfinal round. The second-seeded Irish earned a first round bye after defeating Georgetown 3-0 to close out the regular season as they edged the Huskies with 19 points on the year. UConn finished the season with 18.
No. 5 (Blue) Providence (9-5-2, 4-4-1 BIG EAST) defeated West Virginia 1-0 on Oct. 30, its fourth-straight victory to clinch the No. 5 seed. No. 4 (Red) Villanova (8-7-3, 4-3-2 BIG EAST) will host Providence on Wednesday night. The winner will head to Georgetown for a Saturday afternoon match.
No. 5 (Red) USF (9-4-4, 4-3-2 BIG EAST) will play at No. 4 (Blue) West Virginia (9-6-2, 5-4-0 BIG EAST) in the first round. The winner between the Bulls and Mountaineers will take on top-seeded Louisville in the quarterfinals.
Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. will serve as host for the semifinals (Nov. 12) and the championship game (Nov. 14). All three of the matches will be broadcast live on the CBS College Sports Network. In addition, the championship match will be produced by BIG EAST TV and will be available on numerous regional sports networks including SNY in the metro NY area. The champion receives the league's automatic bid to the 48-team NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Championship.
