STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut head men's track and field coach Greg Roy has announced senior Mike Rutt (Sinking Spring, Pa.) as the captain for the upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons. Rutt will be a two-time captain, also serving in the role last season.
Rutt, a two-time All-American and an Academic All-American, has led the Huskies in mid-distance events for the past three seasons, including a fourth place finish in the 800-meter run at the Indoor NCAA Championship during his junior year. In the same year he was also named the Indoor BIG EAST Track Performer of the Year after capturing the crown in the 800-meter run and placing second in the 500-meter run at the BIG EAST Indoor Championship.
"A quiet leader, Mike leads by example both in the classroom and on the track," Roy said. "He brings the credibility of having competed and succeeded at the highest levels of track and field in the United States, and hopes to add to his undergraduate competitive resume. I would expect him to be on the line competing for a spot on the United States Olympic Team in 2012."
The Sinking Spring, Pa. native has represented UConn at the USA Track and Field National Championship twice during his career, placing sixth in the 800-meter run during 2009 and reaching the semifinals last season.
Rutt and the Huskies will open the 2011 Indoor season at the Yale Invitational on January 15, 2011 in New Haven, Conn.
