Huskies Drop 3-2 Heartbreaker To Sacred Heart

STORRS, Conn. - In a hard fought game, the University of Connecticut men's hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Sacred Heart University on Saturday. David Berube scored the gamewinner for the Pioneers who extend their unbeaten streak to 12 games.
Six Huskies recorded a point on the night while Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.) notched a goal for the second-straight game and Chris Waterstradt (Tulsa, Okla.) recorded an assist for the second night in a row.
With the loss, the Huskies earn their 20th loss of the season dropping to 4-20-3 overall and 4-14-3 in AHA play. Sacred Heart improves to 13-9-4 on the year and 11-6-3 in Atlantic Hockey action.
Sacred Heart was the first to get on the board in the game when Erik Boisvert notched a power play goal at 7:16 in the first period, but the Huskies tied things up at one-all at 13:36.
Hernandez recorded UConn's first goal of the game for the second-straight game. Tom Janosz (Elma, N.Y.) started things off for the Huskies dishing the puck into the corner, Jeff Sapieha (Calgary, Alberta) dug the puck out of the corner flipping it in front of the goal where Hernandez got the puck in the back of the net on the Huskies' first shot on goal of the night.
UConn was outshot 14-3 in the first period but took advantage of their shots on goal, sending the game into the first intermission knotted at one-all.
In the second, SHU recorded a delayed penalty goal as Nick Johnson got his 21st goal of the season with some assistance from Patrick Knowlton who notched his 17th assist on the year to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead at the very end of the second.
UConn would not be deterred as they came out strong in the third and tied the game up at two-apiece on a power play opportunity at 9:46. Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.) recorded his team-leading sixth goal of the season with some help from Marcello Ranallo (Burnaby, B.C.) and Waterstradt.
The Huskies fought off a Sacred Heart power play, but one second after the man-up opportunity was over the Pioneers tallied their third goal of the game as Berube netted the game winner on his 10th goal of the season.
Garrett Bartus (St. Charles, Ill.) made an outstanding 33 saves in goal on the night in just under 59 minutes of play between the pipes, while on the other side of the ice, Steven Lagatto grabbed 24 saves.
The Huskies return to action at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum next Friday, February 5 when they take on Canisius in a game beginning at 7:05 p.m.
