QUEENS, N.Y. - Despite a strong offensive effort by the University of Connecticut women's soccer team, a golden goal by St. John's midfielder Amanda Pasciolla in the first overtime period handed the Huskies their first BIG EAST loss of the season and ended their six-game win streak.
The goal by Pasciolla was only the sixth Red Storm shot of the night and only the second shot on goal of the entire game for St. John's.
With the loss, the Huskies fall to 6-3-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST while St. John's remains undefeated in BIG EAST action improving their record to 8-2-0, 2-0-0 BIG EAST.
The Huskies came out firing in the first half taking two shots on goal in the first minute and a half that were saved by St. John's goalie Kristin Russell. UConn's shots kept coming throughout the game as sophomore Melissa Busque (St. Bruno, Quebec) lead the team in shots taken with six including one that clanged off the post in the 77th minute.
St. John's and UConn traded shots in the first overtime period. Just a minute after junior Elise Fugowski (Stockholm, N.J.) sent a shot high over the net, Pasciolla blasted a shot of her own high over sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Dulski's (Pittsford, N.Y.) head for the win.
The Huskies dominated St. John's in the shot column taking 17 compared to St. John's six.
The loss is the first in the month of September for UConn and the first overtime loss of the season.
UConn is back in action on Sunday, September 27 against Syracuse at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium at 1 p.m.
