UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A late header by Brigham Young freshman midfielder Carlee Payne off of a corner kick in the 86th minute of the game handed the University of Connecticut women's soccer team their first loss of the 2009 season.
The Huskies fell to 0-1-0 on the year while the Cougars earned their first victory in 2009 improving to 1-0-1.
Brigham Young controlled much of the game outshooting the Huskies 9-6. UConn was only able to manage two shots in the first half and didn't have a shot on goal the entire game.
During the second half, the Huskies brought more offense but the majority of their shots taken were blocked by the BYU defense. The Husky underclassmen took five of UConn's six shots on the day. Freshman Linda Ruutu (Espoo, Finland) led the offense with two shots taken, one in each half.
Near the end of the game, the Cougars made some late substitutions that proved to be beneficial as Payne reentered the game with just seven minutes remaining. Less than three minutes later, at 85:17, she headed in the game winner off of a corner kick taken by Anderson sealing the victory for BYU.
UConn sophomore Jessica Dulski (Pittsford, N.Y.) got the start between the posts for the Huskies, the first start of her career, making three saves.
The Huskies return to action on the pitch on Monday, August 31 in their final game at the Penn State Tournament where they will take on the tournament hosts and the No. 8 ranked Nittany Lions at 2:30 p.m. Catch the action here!
