GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team finished in seventh place among 50 scoring teams at the 2009 NCAA East Regional Championship on Saturday.
With 35 overall points, the Huskies had the best finish ever in school history at the championship as seven possible student-athletes will compete in six events as they advance on to the National Championship is Fayetteville, Ark. on June 10-13.
Two-time All-American Carin Knight took first place in the high jump with a mark of 1.84 meters (6' ½") as she became just the second regional champion for the Huskies, after winning the event two years ago as a freshman. Her finish automatically qualifies her for the National Championship as she also broke the facility record at North Carolina A&T with her performance.
Senior Amanda Martin entered the weekend competition ranking sixth in the region in the javelin and had a remarkable outing, finishing second on Saturday morning as she set personal and school records with a throw of 50.94 meters.
The UConn 4x100 meter relay team, who broke the school record on Friday night with a finishing time of 44.42 in the preliminaries, finished in fourth place in the finals with a time of 44.44. That group includes Jessica Foreman, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, Phylicia George and Monique Hodges.
Hawthorne also did well in her sprinting events, taking third place in both the 100 and 200 meter dash. Her finishing times of 11.53 in the 100 meter and 23.72 in the 200 meter helped the Huskies move up in the final standings to the seventh place finish.
"This was an absolutely incredible second day of competition for us," said head coach Bill Morgan. "Our athletes competed hard and had spectacular outings for us. We had just an amazing finish this weekend."
