PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Connecticut women's track and field team won its second consecutive ECAC Outdoor Championship on Sunday afternoon as sophomore Trisha-Ann Hawthorne earned the title of Most Outstanding Performer of the meet.
Defending their crown from the 2008 season, the Huskies entered the 2009 ECAC Championship after being the runner-up in the 2009 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship a few weeks ago. The Huskies have had an outstanding year and are capitilizing on their successful senior class as well as their very talented group of underclassmen.
The Huskies had some solid outings at the ECAC Championship from both the sprint and hurdle events as well as field events, led by two All-Americans. UConn continues to dominate competition and will look to individual athletes to keep up that spark at the NCAA Regional Championship.
At the ECAC's, Hawthorne won both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash to lead UConn this past weekend as she did two weeks ago at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, where she too, was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the meet. Her winning times in the 100 and 200 were 11.73 and 23.75, respectively.
The sophomore also guided the Huskies in the 4x100 meter relay as she was the winning leg of the relay en route to the Huskies' school record-breaking performance. The 4x100 relay finished with a record time of 44.95 in the event preliminaries on Saturday afternoon. The group that combined for the record-breaking performance included Jessi Foreman, Hawthorne, Monique Hodges and Phylicia George.
The Huskies' first place score of 88 points dominated the field of 75 scored teams as Virginia (58) and West Virginia (47.25) rounded out the top three finishers. Duke climbed into a close fourth place finish with 41.25 points.
"This was a great meet for us," said head coach Bill Morgan. "Winning the ECAC Championship for the second straight year is a great accomplishment that sets us up for many more great things during the championship season."
Freshman All-American Victoria Flowers scored points for the Huskies in Saturday's competition as she took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.37 meters. Two-time All-American Carin Knight went for a personal record mark of 1.84 meters (6'0.25") in the high jump, which earned her the top finish in that event.
Senior Amanda Martin took second place in the javelin with a throw of 49.05 meters (160' 11"), while Phylicia George took third place in the 100 meter hurdles with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.74.
Mandela Graves-Fulgham finished in fourth place in the 400 meter dash as she recorded an NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 54.37.
