AMHERST, Mass. - A seven-run bottom of the fourth helped UMass to a 9-0 win over the University of Connecticut in five innings in Amherst, Mass. Thursday. The loss was the first mercy-rule loss and the 12th shutout of the season for the Huskies who played in their final non-conference game of the season.
UMass handed UConn their 20th loss of the season as they dropped to 28-20 with the loss while the Minutewomen improved to 32-7 on the season.
Despite an offensive onslaught by the Huskies in the first, second and third innings they couldn't get any runners across the plate and left eight runners on and in scoring position. UMass was the first team to strike scoring two in the bottom of the second inning. The Minutewomen had bases loaded with no outs, but thanks to senior Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.), the Huskies got out of the inning allowing just two runs.
UConn mimicked UMass in the top of the third by loading the bases with no outs, but Brandice Balschmiter buckled down and struck out the next three batters to leave the inning unscathed.
In the bottom of the fourth, UMass came to the plate with a purpose and knocked in seven runs on nine hits as 11 batters came to the plate for the Minutewomen. By the end of the inning, everyone in the starting lineup for UMass had garnered a hit.
The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, May 2 at Noon against Providence on Senior Day at the Burrill Family Field in Storrs.
