STORRS, Conn. - Two solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth inning put the University of Connecticut softball team on top for the first time during the game as they went on to defeat Villanova 3-2, Sunday. The Huskies got all of their runs via the solo home run in the victory.
After Villanova got a runner across in the top of the first, senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) got the Huskies back into the game with a solo shot to dead centerfield tying the game at one-apiece. The homer was the eighth of the season for the senior and the 33rd of her career.
Villanova got back on top in the top of the sixth scoring pinch runner Jamie O'Hara on a bloop single to left field. Despite a few Villanova opportunities with runners on second and third and only one out, the Husky defense shut down the Wildcats allowing just the one run.
In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) started things off for the Huskies tying the game with just one swing of the bat. DeLuca's blast over the leftfield wall was her third of the season. With two outs, senior Erin Burtner (Jefferson, Md.) hit the game-winner that eked by the foul pole for her third homer of the season and second in the last four days.
Senior Rachael Crossin (Fairless Hills, Pa.) was outstanding on the mound for the Huskies earning her ninth victory of the season. In the six innings pitched, Crossin sat down 10 batters via the strikeout, the fourth time this season that Crossin has struck out 10 or more batters in a game.
The Huskies are back in action for game two of the doubleheader against Villanova.
