QUEENS, N.Y. - Due in part to a 10-run third inning in game two, the University of Connecticut softball team split a series at St. John's, Saturday. The Huskies fell in game one 2-0, unable to get any offense going but in game two, UConn's bats came to life as they downed the Red Storm in five innings, 14-2.
With the split UConn is now 26-18, 8-11 BIG EAST while St. John's now is 23-20, 11-9 BIG EAST.
The 14 runs scored are the most that they Huskies have scored in a single game this season. The Huskies came out with a meaning in game two scoring the first two runners that got to the plate. In the second inning, the Huskies added 10 runs as 14 Huskies came to the plate. UConn had eight hits including a two-run homer for senior Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) who now has 20 home runs in her career, second on the all-time list at UConn.
Freshman Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) and junior Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) each had two hits in the inning while Del Ponte and senior Erin Burtner (Jefferson, Md.) both reached twice during the inning. DeLuca had two singles during the inning and Roy knocked out two doubles.
Five Huskies had two RBIs on the day while nine came in to score a run during the game.
Game one was tougher for the Huskies as they only managed two hits the entire game. A couple of unearned runs in the fourth inning proved to be the deciding factor in the loss. UConn was only able to get runners on in the fourth and sixth innings.
The Huskies are back in action Sunday against Villanova on Strike Out Cancer day. The doubleheader will be televised on Cox Cable with the first game shown on Tuesday April 28 at 8:00 p.m. and the second game on Wednesday April 29 at the same time.
