The University of Connecticut women's 4x100 meter relay earned their first ever berth to the Championship of America on Thursday and will look to finish towards the top of the heat in the finals on Friday as the Huskies compete at the Penn Relays this weekend.
With the 45.60 finish on Thursday, UConn's 4x100 relay team consisting of Monique Hodges, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, Jessica Foreman and Phylicia George, will compete in the finals of the event on Friday at 1:15 p.m.
"Today was a good day for us," said head coach Bill Morgan. "We are trying to continue the trend of making the Championship of America in the spring relays, like we did last year with our 4x200 team."
Freshman All-American Victoria Flowers finished in third place in the championship hammer throw to lead the way for the Huskies in field events on Thursday.
The Huskies now turn their sights to Friday, when two-time All-American Carin Knight takes the spotlight in the high jump. Knight was the second place finisher just a year ago at Penn Relays and looks to match that performance for the Huskies this season. Rachael Porter joins Knight in the high jump, which will begin on Friday at 1:45 p.m.
The Huskies' 4x200 meter relay team will compete on Friday at 2:10 p.m. as they are also looking to reach the Championship of America as they did last season.
"Today we had a lot of success from our relay team in making the Championship of America for the first time in school history in the 4x100," said Morgan. "We are looking forward to tomorrow's finals as well as the rest of the competition this weekend.
UConn will continue to compete at the Penn Relays this weekend. The event will take place all day Friday as well as Saturday. For live results and heat sheets go to PennRelaysOnline.com.
