UConn Races Pass Competition At Husky Spring Invite

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team took home 11 first place finishes in 19 events to run away with the victory at the UConn Spring Invitational. The Huskies finished with 113 points while second place finisher Boston University only had 46, third place finisher Brown had 25 and Quinnipiac finished with 5.
At the meet, two UConn athletes finished with NCAA Regional qualifying times. In the shot put, senior Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) out threw his competition walking away with a first place finish with his throw of 14.86m (55-3.75). Dubs improved upon his throw last week by .1 of a meter to qualify himself for the NCAA Regionals.
Also qualifying in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles was junior Kyle Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.). Edmonds finished the race in first with a time of 52.15. Edmonds also came close to qualifying in the 110m hurdles finishing that race in first with a time of 14.55.
UConn was dominant in the field events with senior Jim Roy (West Simsbury, Conn.) and junior Ed Strosnick battled it out for the top spot in the javelin with Roy just eking out a win. Roy finished with an IC4A qualifying distance of 59.93m (196-7) while Strosnick finished at 59.91 (196-6).
Sophomore Pat Sampson (Middletown, R.I.) finished second in the hammer throw, but first among NCAA athletes, with his best throw of the season and career, an IC4A qualifying distance of 54.02m (177-03).
Senior Ellis Gaulden (Tallahassee, Fla.) took first in the high jump with a height of 2.05m (6-8.75) while freshman Matt Alexander (Tolland, Conn.) took home the title in the pole vault with a height of 4.75m (15-7).
On the track side of things, sophomore Scott Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) started things off with a win taking home the 3000m steeplechase title.
In the 100m dash, senior Anthony Pomo (Saddle Brook, N.J.) had an outstanding day as he finished first with his fastest time of the season, and IC4A qualifying 10.68 seconds. Freshman Tyler Hopson (Andover, Conn.) and junior Anthony Burris (Bridgeport, Conn.) also finished with IC4A qualifying times both coming in at 10.80.
Freshman Tim Bennatan (Lake Forest, Ill.) brought home the 800m title with his first place finish of 1:52.34. Also bringing home first place finishes were both of the relay teams. The 4x100m relay team finished in 41.44 and the 4x400m relay team finished in 3:21.88.
The Huskies are back in action next weekend when they compete at the Penn Relays from April 23 to 25 and at the UMass Invitational on April 25.
