ATHENS, Ga. - Long jumping senior Ellis Gaulden (Tallahassee, Fla.) qualified for the NCAA Regionals with his performance of 7.43m (24-4.5 feet) in his first meet of the outdoor season at the Spec Towns Invitational. Gaulden didn't foul in any of his attempts at the long jump on the day bringing home the lone University of Connecticut title of the day.
Gaulden also did well in the high jump earning a second place finish with an IC4A qualifying jump of 2.05m (6-8.75).
The Huskies top track performances came from senior Anthony Pomo (Saddle Brook, N.J.) and junior Kyle Edmonds (Metuchen, N.J.) who earned individual IC4A performances in their respective events as well as helped their relay teams to IC4A qualifying times. Pomo took sixth in the 100m run with a time of 10.82 while Edmonds finished fourth in the 400m hurdles in 53.57 seconds.
UConn's two relay teams earned IC4A qualifying times on the day. The 4x100m relay took fourth with a time of 41.24, an improvement of over one second from their performance last weekend. The 4x400m relay team also improved on last weekend's time finishing in 3:14.96.
Five UConn athletes recorded six IC4a qualifying marks on the field. Gaulden had two with his outstanding performances while sophomore Kyle Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) qualified with his 4.90m (16-0.75) pole vault height.
In the triple jump, junior Jamaal Smith (Albany, N.Y.) finished second with a distance of 14.84m (48-8.25) while in the shot put senior Andrew Dubs (Holland, Pa.) launched a 16.76m (55-0) throw, just narrowly missing the NCAA Regional mark for a seventh place finish.
Finally, in the javelin, freshman Eric Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) came in second overall and first among college athletes with his toss of 60.10m (197-2), five feet better than his throw at the UConn Invitational.
The Huskies are back in action next weekend when they host their final home meet of the season, the UConn Spring Invitational on April 18.
