Softball Crushes Hofstra 6-1

CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 8, 2009) - The University of Connecticut softball team won their third game of the USF Under Armour Invitational ending the weekend over .500 with a 3-2 record. The Huskies (4-5) outscored their opponents 29-12 over the course of the weekend. UConn downed Hofstra 6-1 for their first win over the Pride (4-8) since May 1, 2001.
UConn struck first for the third time during the tournament improving their record to 3-0 on the weekend and 4-1 overall when scoring first. Sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) was the first Husky to cross the plate. She got on base after getting hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a single by senior Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.), to third on a fielder's choice by senior Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) and eventually to home on yet another fielder's choice by senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.). Later in the inning, Del Ponte and Truax would also score on a single to centerfield by freshman Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.).
They added to their lead in the second with Towers recording her second run of the game. Over the course of the weekend, Towers scored eight runs and recorded another three RBIs. Ortega also scored for the Huskies during the second making the UConn lead 6-0 just an inning and a half into the game. Ortega, like Towers, recorded eight runs and three RBIs on the weekend.
Junior Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) and the Huskies gave up an unearned run during the bottom of the third, but wouldn't allow another hit during the game. Sullivan finished the game allowing five hits, all in the first three innings, and recording four strikeouts improving her weekend record to 3-1 and her season record to 4-2.
The Huskies are back in action on Tuesday, March 10 at 4:00/6:00 p.m. for a double header with BIG EAST opponent South Florida.
