CLEARWATER, Fla. (March 7, 2009) - The University of Connecticut women's softball team split their second day of play at the USF Under Armour Invitational. The Huskies (3-5) took game one in a dominating fashion defeating Evansville, (5-8) 9-2, but falling to Boston University (8-2) in game two of the day, 3-0.
In game one, the Huskies came out firing and they scored in the first inning for the third time this season with all runs coming from sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.). When Towers scores in the first, the Huskies are 2-1. UConn not only got a run across by Towers, but seniors Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) and Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) each crossed the plate to give UConn a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
Evansville cut into the lead in the second, but the Huskies got their three-run lead back in the third as Ortega scored her second run of the game and added another three in the top of the fourth with sophomore Jess Arremony (Griswold, Conn.), Towers and Ortega all scoring for the Huskies.
Evansville added another run in the bottom of the fourth, but UConn's offense did not quit despite their five-run lead. In the top of the sixth they got another couple of Huskies across the plate as senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) and pinch-runner freshman Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) each scored giving the Huskies a 9-2 lead and the game one victory.
In game two, there was not much happening for either team. Boston University got on the board first in the top of the first after April Stetterlund tripled and scored. But neither team could manage a run after that until the top of the seventh when the Terriers tacked on another couple insurance runs for the 3-0 victory.
The Huskies had their best opportunity to score in the fifth inning but were unable to push a run across and were shut out for only the second time this season.
The Huskies are back in action tomorrow in their final game of the USF Under Armour Invitational at noon against Hofstra.
