STORRS, Conn. - In their first home games of the 2009 season, the University of Connecticut softball team dropped two decisions to DePaul on the Burrill Family Field at the UConn Softball Complex, Saturday. The Huskies are now 14-10 overall, 2-4 BIG EAST.
DePaul (16-7, 4-0 BIG EAST) was lead by Jackie Tarulli-Fisher who blasted two homeruns for five RBIs during the doubleheader and Amber Patton who is currently batting .692 in BIG EAST play after her 4-for-7 effort Saturday.
With the two-wins, DePaul has taken nine-straight games from the Huskies.
DePaul took game one from the Huskies after getting out to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Brittany Yniguez sent a shot to right center field that rolled all the way to the outfield fence which brought home Becca Heteniak and Lynsey Cieski.
In the top of the sixth, DePaul extended their lead to five when Heteniak sent a three-run homer to dead center. Although the Huskies managed four hits throughout the game they were unable to put any runs together and were shut out for the sixth time this season and third in BIG EAST play.
The Blue Demons' offense continued into game two. They put up two runs in the first inning and another three in the second before the Huskies were able to get on the board. In the bottom of the second, freshman Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) homered to left for her first round tripper of her collegiate career. The home run cut the DePaul lead to four.
DePaul was able to get that run back in the top of the third and continued to score a run in every inning of the game with the exception of the sixth.
UConn added some more runs to the board in the bottom of the fourth. DeLuca got on base for the second time during the game after an error by the DePaul third baseman Patton. She was brought home just one batter later when senior Sarah Neuschwander (Chugiak, Alaska) launched her first home run of the season and ninth of her career to cut the lead to four.
That was all that the Huskies would get though. In the bottom of the ninth they threatened to score after freshman Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) singled to begin the inning and sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) doubled to the gap in right center. But DePaul pitcher Lindsay Dean buckled down and closed out the game handing the Huskies their 10th loss of the season.
UConn is back in action tomorrow, Sunday March 29 with a doubleheader against Syracuse that will begin at Noon.
