Huskies Down Sacred Heart In Weekday Doubleheader

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A 4-for-7 effort by senior Micah Truax (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) helped the University of Connecticut softball team to a sweep over Sacred Heart, Wednesday.
UConn took game one, 3-0 and blasted Sacred Heart in game two by a 6-1 score. The Huskies (13-8) remain undefeated against the Pioneers (3-14) in their series history, winning all four games between the two teams.
Game one was highlighted by Truax's perfect 3-for-3 effort and junior Tricia Sullivan's (New Bedford, Mass.) one-hitter. A four-run sixth inning in game two capped of the impressive offensive effort by the Huskies.
With a hit in each of the games, senior Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) kept her hitting streak alive extending it to 10 games.
The Huskies were the first team to get on the board in game one. Truax singled to centerfield and was brought home on Del Ponte's single down the left field line. When scoring in the first, UConn is 8-1.
They added to their lead in the second inning. Sophomore Julianne Towers (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) tripled down the left field line for her first triple of the season. She reached home just one batter later when Truax drove her in on her second single of the day. The Huskies put another run up on the board in the sixth inning to secure their victory and take the 3-0 win.
Sullivan threw a near perfect game one striking out four and only allowing one-hit over the course of seven innings. Her only hit allowed during the game came in the second inning on a single to the shortstop Jess Arremony (Griswold, Conn.).
Sacred Heart was the first team to get on the board in game two when their leadoff batter, Taylor Froelich scored to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead which they would hold until the fourth inning.
UConn tied the game up when senior Jillian Ortega (Aberdeen, N.J.) came around to score after reaching on a fielder's choice. She advanced on the base paths with her first stolen base of the year and a wild pitch.
The fifth inning brought home the winning run for the Huskies. Arremony got herself on with a leadoff single to centerfield. She moved up to second on a fielder's choice by senior Erin Burtner (Jefferson, Md.) and to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.). A sacrifice fly by Towers brought home the eventual game-winner for the Huskies.
UConn piled on even more runs in the sixth inning to secure their lead. The inning was highlighted by a leadoff homer by Ortega, her third of the year.
The Huskies are back in action tomorrow, Thursday, March 26, 2009 at Boston College with a 4:00 p.m. start time.
