SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Oklahoma State sophomore Mariah Gearhart got on base three times and scored three times en route to the Cowgirls (21-6) shut out of the University of Connecticut (8-8) softball team in their final game of the San Diego Classic, 4-0.
The usual offense that the Huskies had throughout the weekend didn't appear in the game against Oklahoma State as they were only able to manage two hits on the day. Oklahoma State got out to a quick 1-0 lead and kept adding to it throughout the game. In the fifth, the Huskies tried to comeback getting four runners on base, but they couldn't push any of them across the plate.
Sophomore Jess Arremony (Griswold, Conn.) and senior Danielle Del Ponte (Tewksbury, Mass.) were the only Huskies to get hits on the day. Arremony's came in the third inning when she singled up the middle and Del Ponte also singled up the middle, but in the fourth inning.
UConn finished out the weekend with a 4-1 record, their best in tournament play during the 2009 season.
The Huskies are back in action this Thursday, March 19 in their first game in the state of Connecticut when they take on Quinnipiac on the road at 3:30 p.m.
