STORRS, Conn. -
The University of Connecticut women's track and field team will begin its 2009-10 indoor campaign on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Brown's Alden Invitational.Coming off the program's best year ever, having won multiple championships with back-to-back BIG EAST and New England titles, the Huskies attained a new benchmark in its history. The highlight may have been the No. 13 national ranking held during the indoor season, along with a seventh place showing in the NCAA Regional Championship. It certainly was a year of highlights and a three-year run of nine major championships.
"With the start of a new year, our team takes on a different look for a number of reasons," said head coach Bill Morgan. "We look to blend a large freshmen class with our solid group of seasoned veterans and where we were void in a number of events we now look for scoring possibilities and anticipate the readiness of our team will not be fully realized until late January into early February.
"Once again I believe there are great possibilities for the championship season," added Morgan. "The Brown (Alden) Invitational provides the first opportunity, and although we will hold back a number of individuals because of their training cycle, look for leadership from three-time All-American and captain Carin Knight in the high jump; NCAA and BIG EAST record holder Tynisha McMillian in the shot put; and NCAA participant and captain Phylicia George in the hurdles. A host of freshmen will begin their careers and I would expect them to have a positive first experience."
